Foster Care

Type of service:
Child and Family Service

Barnardos offers a foster care service in Auckland, where our committed team of social workers work alongside a number of foster carers who provide a safe environment for children and young people who are unable to live with their parents or extended whānau for this period in their lives.

Some are in care through voluntary agreements with parents or guardians who are experiencing difficulties, while others are in care because it is the only option to protect them from abuse and neglect.

Foster placements are for varying periods of time – emergency overnight placements, short, medium and long-term care, and permanent care, when families take formal responsibility for the care of the child through the Family Court. We also provide some respite care for children.

We are always on the lookout for more foster carers, and people from different walks of life are welcome to apply. There is no perfect type of person/family that makes a good foster carer, it’s about using the skills and life experiences you have to provide a safe home for a child or young person to be themselves in.

One of our biggest challenges is finding foster carers who are willing to care for the older range of young people, so if you feel you have the skills and passion to help teenagers please contact us to explore the opportunity to become a foster carer with Barnardos.

Our fostering team of social workers will complete an assessment with you and support you with ongoing training, regular home visits, and a 24/7 after-hour’s duty service. We will of course arrange some fun activities and social get-togethers throughout the year too.
