Our latest appeal

Every year, thousands of New Zealand children are born into lives where they’re at risk of abuse and neglect, often continuing a destructive cycle that has lasted for generations. We urgently need your support so we can help these children and their families. Together, we can break the cycle of abuse and neglect.

We probably don’t need to tell you about our country’s horrifying rates of child abuse and neglect – if you’ve turned on the news or picked up a paper recently you’ll have seen the statistics for yourself. You’ll know that New Zealand has one of the highest rates of physical child abuse in the developed world. You’ll have seen that there are at least 60 substantiated cases of child abuse occurring in our communities every day.

The immediate pain and suffering inflicted on our children are heartbreaking, and the physical and emotional damage can last a lifetime. We know that abused and neglected children are more likely to experience poor health and low academic achievement. As they grow up, they’re also more likely to have a greater reliance on state benefits and to be involved in criminal activity.

It doesn’t have to be this way – you can help change the future of a child at risk today. By making a donation now, you will help us make positive changes in the lives of children who are at risk of abuse and neglect.

Every day we’re out in communities, working in homes and schools to ensure that children and families get the support they need. Across our wide range of services, we look out for children. When things are not right, when the safety of a child is compromised and when families need extra support, we are there for them.

By doing this we’re often able to identify children who are most at risk, and address problems before they get out of control. We will then work with families to ensure that their homes are stable environments where children feel safe and secure. We also work to connect people into positive social networks and to grow strong communities so children don’t feel isolated. And what we do works. Every day we see children begin to flourish, we witness them finding new confidence and we support them in their hopes for the future.

With your help, we are changing children’s lives for the better. Children like five-year-old Alice, whose mother was having difficulty caring for her due to mental health issues; and seven-year-old Max, who was scared and withdrawn because his mum’s new partner was always yelling at him and threatening him. Please make a donation towards Barnardos early intervention work today to continue making a difference to the lives of children like Alice and Max.

We’re doing everything in our power to ensure that children can live free from abuse and neglect. And our power comes from you. We’ve come a long way and achieved so much with the support from our generous donors, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Your kind gift could make all the difference for a child living in fear of abuse or neglect. Don’t delay – please make your donation now and help us break the cycle. Thank you.

Nāku noa, nā, yours sincerely
