Bequests
Children Come First.
Help us to continue to help New Zealand children in the future by including Barnardos in your Will. You can be certain that any bequest to the work of Barnardos New Zealand will make a difference.
Every child is born full of possibilities and potential. Unfortunately for some, the realisation of that potential is limited due to their exposure to neglect, poverty, violence, mental or physical illness.
Every day somewhere in New Zealand, Barnardos is asked to help yet another child or family. You can share our commitment to enabling children's lives by leaving a bequest to Barnardos. Every amount gifted will really help - whether it is a lump sum, an estate percentage, or residual of your estate.
What is a Bequest?
A bequest is a gift you leave in your Will to a person or organisation. There are different types of bequests. The main ones are:
- Residuary bequest: A gift of the remainder of your estate after all other gifts have been made and debts cleared. You may leave either the total of the remainder or a percentage of it. This type of bequest ensures that family members and special friends are provided for.
- Pecuniary bequest: A gift of a fixed sum of money. With this kind of bequest it is recommended that you review your Will regularly to safeguard against inflation. This is because the value of a pecuniary gift will decrease over time, as the cost of living increases.
- Contingent bequest: A gift in your Will that is dependent upon the occurrence of an event which may or may not happen. For example a gift to a charity which applies only if other beneficiaries named in your Will pass away before you do.
- A gift of assests: A gift of a home, business property, stocks and shares, or a portion of these.
What will Barnardos use my Bequest for?
Most bequests are made for the general purposes of Barnardos New Zealand, allowing us to use your gift wherever it is needed most at the time.
The bequests we receive are used according to the wishes of the donor, as far as possible.
However, should you wish to choose a specific service Barnardos New Zealand provides, it may be very helpful to talk to us prior to be sure to direct it correctly. You can contact the Fundraising team at fundraising@barnardos.org.nz. We would be delighted to help with your enquiry.
What do I need to do in order to make a Bequest?
Because of the importance of your Will we recommend you get a Solicitor to do this for you.
When you have decided to make a provision in your Will for Barnardos, you can either include Barnardos in a new Will, or add a Codicil to an existing Will, in favour of Barnardos. (Codicil example in next section 'How do I leave a Bequest')
How do I leave a bequest?
To make a new Will, update or add a Codicil to an existing Will, contact your legal advisor, trustee company or public trust. The following standard wording may be useful:
I give and bequeath to Barnardos New Zealand (specify gift)....................................... free of all charges and to be used where most needed. The official receipt from Barnardos New Zealand will be sufficient acknowledgement of having received this gift.
