Finding family accomodation
Are you and your family looking for a bigger flat to move to? Have you been told to leave the place where you are living? Are you living in a shed, caravan, or even a tent? Or, are you escaping domestic violence with your children and wanting to set up home in a new location? On this page you will find an outline of the main options available to you.
Emergency accommodation
Needing emergency housing is the most stressful of all housing situations to be in and often the most difficult to sort out. The immediate need is to get a roof over your heads before dealing with the longer term issue of finding somewhere more permanent to live.
There are a number of organisations around the country which provide emergency accommodation. Contact your local Citizens Advice Bureau to find out what organisations in your area may be able to help you.
Housing options
There are a number of short-term options that you can consider, including private board, staying with friends or extended family/whanau, or staying in a caravan park, etc. These are suitable in the short term while you look for a longer term option.
For the longer term, however, you will need to think about how much you can afford for board, rent, or mortgage payments. Also does your family have any special requirements? Do you have pets? Do you need wheelchair access, garage space, a specific location, etc?
Rental accommodation
The most common housing option for families is renting. If you are a low income family, start by applying for a Housing New Zealand house -- the houses are generally well built and maintained and the rent is income related. You will probably go on a waiting list, but your priority rating will be influenced by your family circumstances.
Private rental housing can be located on sites such as Homeads, Trade me or in the To Let pages of the local newspaper. Alternatively, you could consider using a letting agency, but remember that an agency will charge you a finding fee.
Buying a home
Buying your own home should only be considered if you:
- plan to stay in the location for some time
- are in a stable relationship, or you are able to make payments by yourself
- are not overextending yourself financially with debt
- have a steady income.
For further information and advice, see a financial adviser or contact your bank.
