A NEW ZEALAND CHILD NEEDS YOUR HELP NOW
Gemma is an example of a vulnerable child who endured much hardship as a result of her parents’ addictions. Gemma has seen many things that no child should ever see…She’s seen her dad attack her mum with a pair of scissors. She’s seen strangers kick down the door and demand money. She’s had to learn to take care of herself, to try and keep warm and clean, to get dressed in the morning and find her own food. At just 4 years old Gemma was not only trying to care for herself, but also her little sister Karen. The day her father was imprisoned for drug-related offences was the day Gemma’s mum had the chance to change their lives. She managed to come off the drugs and desperately wanted to do the right thing for her daughters. She made contact with Barnardos. Gemma now attends a Day Care Centre and has a place of sanctuary provided by Barnardos. The family is getting counselling help from our Family Support workers as well as financial advice, so their mother can get them into a warm and stable environment. It will take much care and patience to rebuild Gemma’s life, but thanks to us, she is making good progress. Barnardos has given Gemma a glimpse of what life is like for most 4-year-olds. She is experiencing a life of learning and fun, without all the violence and fear. Yes, I want to give a child a chance today! To become a One Child One Chance donor you can email marilyn.timperley@barnardos.org.nz or phone 0800 005437 to request more information and a registration form.
