How you helped
![]() June, birthday... Uncertain – without our presence.
Sadly for June, the move from four to five went by without anything good happening.
She just lay on the couch wrapped in a towel trying to be invisible. She had wet
her pants again and when the people in the room finally stopped shouting and hitting
each other, June thought they might start on her again.
Birthdays are forgotten for many children like June. There aren’t any cards or cakes and certainly no presents to keep. However, the big day that June didn’t know about was really quite extraordinary... The shouting and hitting was interrupted by a lot of other noise and commotion in and around the house and amidst it all a woman picked June up and put her in a car and they drove quickly away. June was too scared to even cry. At another house, in another place, June just curled up in a ball and stayed scared. She’d wet the towel again and the chair got wet but this time she got a warm bath and a cuddle instead of being hurt. Later she got some food and was ‘rocked’ to sleep. It had been a special day for June after all. The noise and commotion was the Armed Offenders Squad helping remove June* from her old home. The lady in the car was from Child, Youth & Family. The house with the cuddles was a Barnardos Foster care home. After a lot of watching, June eventually started playing with the other children. Things gradually got better for June and the birthday she hadn’t known about had given her a lot. *Names and some details have been changed to protect the individuals involved.
