How do I become a foster carer?

The approval process requires Child, Youth and Family and Police checks, medical and personal references.

As well as completing the core preparation training, applicants are required to engage with social workers through a period of home visits in order to complete the assessment report. Approval is made on the basis of a full and complete assessment. Children and young people can only be placed once this is completed. We look for foster families who can provide a safe, nurturing and stable environment, as well as a willingness to develop their own skills and to work as part of a team with the child or young person.

"It is very disquieting just how many New Zealand children are born into a hostile world of deprivation and abuse. That is why I have included Barnardos in my Will, to help them in their work of giving such children a chance in life."
