Child and Family Counselling

Whether it be the loss of a parent or child, a relationship break up or the forming of a stepfamily, Barnardos child and family counsellors can help.

They provide support and advice for those families facing a crisis in their lives. Barnardos also offers adoption/foster care counselling for any situation involving long term separation from birth family members, and issues which may arise from this.

This includes:

• Preparation prior to placement
• Support to all parties following adoption
• Search and reunion work when family members have been separated for lengthy periods
• Assisting both New Zealand and UK born adoptees to obtain their Original Birth Certificates and records.

We also provide a service for people who were raised by Barnardos and other Child Care Agencies in the UK and who now reside in New Zealand. We are able to assist them to access their care files from the UK, provide ongoing support as they make sense of their personal histories, and in the case of Barnardos Old Boys and Girls, link them with other former Barnardos Children who may have resided at the same Homes, or had similar experiences.

A regular Old Boys and Girls Newsletter enables information and recollections to be shared amongst this group of clients.
