Jean Béliveau's walk around the world - NZ leg dedicated to Barnardos NZ, 22-09-2010

On 18 August 2000, at 9.00am, Jean Béliveau left his family behind to undertake a mission – to walk around the world through all 5 continents.

He has already crossed the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia and is now preparing to land in New Zealand at the end of September. Starting his walk at Bluff, he will proceed to walk the 2,000 km length of New Zealand where he will finish at Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island.

New Zealand is the 63rd country in which he will have travelled and the last before he returns to Canada where he will complete his journey from Vancouver back to his original starting point in Montréal - hopefully arriving around October 2011.

His goal is to walk 75,000 km and by the time he reaches NZ he will have walked 68,300 km. He has worn out 48 pairs of shoes and the wwwalk will be the longest walk around the world without returning home.

Jean is dedicating his journey to the UNESCO Decade, 2001-2010 INTERNATIONAL DECADE FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE AND NON-VIOLENCE FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE WORLD.

Throughout his journey , thousands of people in many countries have been involved in either supporting or participating in various activities to help Jean raise awareness for a culture of Peace for Children.

To read more about Jean please read : www.wwwalk.org

Thought out his journey Jean has been supported by the generosity of others.

As part of New Zealand walk, Jean has chosen to support Barnados New Zealand as his charity of choice.

We will hopefully be adding some information around dates that Jean will be in your areas - keep an eye out!

Christchurch Update, 07-09-2010

The decision has been made to close all Christchurch sites for remainder of week, with the exception of Te Poutama Arahi Rangatahi.

Christchurch Regional Office - Colombo Street

Following the strong aftershock this morning (08/09/10), the decision has been made to close the office for the rest of the week.

KidStart

Kaiapoi – building can’t be accessed. Staff working from home, so service operational to a minor degree. KidStart educators that can operate are still providing a care service. Visiting Teachers are visiting them to ensure their homes comply with safety requirements. We are seeking to assist parents as necessary with alternative care.

Christchurch Urban

Two Visiting Teachers are working from home and are operating as per North Canterbury KidStart.

ELCs

Richmond (12 Slater St) – few cracks in walls and some foundations, but not deemed to be structural; broken pipes at rear; adult toilets not working. Not significant damage but repairs required before the centre can operate again.

Te Puna Oraka (including the hub)

No obvious issues. Will advise when the service can be operable again.

Child and Family Services

A limited service will be provided, covered by the Team Leader. Supervised Children's Contact will be cancelled for next weekend pending structural check on Barnardos property in Ensors Road.

Ensors Road

No obvious signs of damage, but requiring engineering assessment.

Te Poutama Arahi Rangatahi

Back on mains power after running on a generator for most of the weekend. Seems to have escaped any significant damage

We will be seeking to update information regularly about Barnardos services and facilities in Canterbury. If you have any concerns or questions please ring:

Fundraising

"It is very disquieting just how many New Zealand children are born into a hostile world of deprivation and abuse. That is why I have included Barnardos in my Will, to help them in their work of giving such children a chance in life."
