S.K.I.P. (Strategies with Kids/Information for Parents) is a government initiative to positively change how children are raised in New Zealand. Its vision is to support parents and caregivers of children aged 0-5 and enable them to feel confident about managing their children’s behaviour as part of a loving and nurturing relationship.
The S.K.I.P. initiative works through the provision of a large range of free positive discipline resources developed in consultation with families and communities; through community driven local initiatives that are developed to meet the needs of those families; and through partnerships with national non government agencies to further enhance and strengthen the parenting support that is already offered to families.
Assisting parents to become more ‘conscious’ about how they are behaving and the values and beliefs underlying their actions, whilst supporting them to better understand the ‘six principles of effective discipline’ are the concepts through which the initiative achieves change in families’ disciplining practices.
Barnardos has had a S.K.I.P partnership with the Ministry of Social Development since 2004.
