Parents say positive parenting works

"Discipline has a lasting impact on the wellbeing of children so it’s important for parents to use positive techniques that support a child’s development and learning. This research shows parents are three times more likely to use positive reinforcement such as rewards, praise, reasoning and distraction to encourage good behaviour, than punishments. However, when punishment was considered necessary parents said the most effective strategies were time out and withdrawal of privileges," said Barnardos Chief Executive, Murray Edridge.

Summit on Children and the Recession presents plan to Minister

Every Child Counts Summit on Children and the Recession presented a plan of action to the Minister of Housing, Hon Phil Heatley to address the well-being of children during the recession.
The plan included 42 recommendations, however the main recommendations, developed by 70 delegates who attended the Summit and presented to the government were: Develop one strategic plan to promote innovation and productivity in the economy and equitable social redistribution that invests in children.

The Crimes (Substituted Section 59) Amendment Act received its Royal Assent a year ago today. A year on, Barnardos NZ says the important law change seems to be working extremely well.
"The child discipline law brought a new and important standard onto our statute books: children deserve the same legal protection from assault as every other citizen. That was a momentous step on the path towards a society that doesn't tolerate any form of violence, and one that truly values and appreciates children," said Murray Edridge, Chief Executive of Barnardos NZ today.
An end to child poverty in New Zealand by 2020

Barnardos New Zealand welcomes the report 'Left Behind' published yesterday by The Child Poverty Action Group and it supports the call for an end to child poverty in New Zealand by 2020. 'It is a simple fact that children raised in poverty suffer negative impacts on their health and development that can stay with them for a lifetime.
New Zealand needs an agreed standard to measure poverty and Barnardos would like to see the adoption of a poverty line set at 60% of the median household income after housing costs,' says Murray Edridge Chief Executive.
