How we are funded

Last year Barnardos spent almost $55 million providing help and support for more than 10,000 New Zealanders when they needed it.

Having a clear focus of putting children first, the demand for our services continues to grow, further stretching our already tight resources. In order to continue providing these quality community services to New Zealanders we are dependant on the support of individuals, businesses, as well as government.

A number of activities offered by Barnardos are only possible with the active support of our donors, whose generosity is an ongoing source of appreciation and inspiration in the organisation. Over 70% of money donated to Barnardos is directly applied in the provision of services.

Barnardos has a strong donor programme that is supported by thousands of people throughout the country. Local bodies, trusts, businesses, clubs and schools are also valued contributors.

Fees and government funding do not meet the total cost of providing our services. To meet the shortfall, and to further develop and meet the demands for our services, Barnardos relies on public support.

Fundraising

Barnardos raises funds to ensure the many services we provide throughout the country continue to be available. The money is used to help New Zealand children and their families overcome issues such as:

• Family break-ups
• Parenting alone
• Custody and access issues
• Physical or mental illness
• Child abuse
• Sexual abuse
• Drug or alcohol abuse
• Family violence
• Neglect
• Bereavement
• Poverty

Funds raised help children who are disadvantaged, neglected or at-risk from abuse to overcome these early adversities.

Fees are charged for some of our services

• Early childhood care and education and out-of-school care
• Counselling and Children's Contact Services
• Some programmes and group activities

Government childcare subsidies are available to some low-income families using our early childhood services. Special arrangements can be made for families who have difficulty with the fees for the counselling and Children's Contact Services.

Government support is also given in the form of Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social Development grants to early childhood education services and contracts for some of Child, Youth and Family services.

It takes time, dedication and a genuinely caring approach to help children and families overcome the myriad of problems they can face. Barnardos is committed to doing so, and the results are worth it.
